The Fresno County Public Library (FCPL), one of the ten cooperative networks of ten public libraries called the San Joaquin Valley Library System (SJVLS), serves nine hundred thousand residents in Fresno. The library maintains almost 2.3 million volumes and circulates almost 4 million items per year. Founded in 1891, the library began its service even with no tax money, but making use of the ninety-two dollars raised by the board of trustees used for supplies and additional money to rent a building that catered to the public on February 1, 1892. Today, FCPL, through the Central Library and 34 branches, has the mission to transform lives and strengthen communities by providing opportunities to connect, grow, and be inspired.
