The South Whittier Library serves 85,311 residents in the City of Whittier and is one of the branches of the County of Los Angeles Public Library. The library system maintains 5.3 million volumes and circulates 16.5 million items per year. First opened in 1915 in a one-room schoolhouse, the South Whittier Library now occupies a 14,411-square-foot building with meeting and study rooms, spaces for children and teens, and several computers, including 11 public computers, eight children's and four teen computers, 10 laptop & hotspot kits, four homework center computers, three early learning computers, and eight express computers. It offers newspaper collections, book drops, in-person and telephone research assistance, online homework help, and other library services.
