The Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield serves 172,570 residents in the city of Smithfield. It maintains roughly 316,870 volumes and circulates 443,575 items per year. The library provides meeting spaces, public access computers, mobile printing, copy/fax/scan/and print services. It offers programs such as adult coloring, adult fiction book club, storytime, anime fan club, internet basics, and technology classes, and is open from 9 AM Monday to Saturday. Additionally, the library operates a Community Pantry launched in March 2023, which is funded in part by the Johnston County Unrestricted Endowment Fund.
