The Hillsboro Public Library serves approximately 137,280 residents of Hillsboro City in Washington County. Established in 1914 with funding from the Carnegie Foundation, the library has grown significantly over the years. In 1975, it moved into a 15,000-square-foot building, made possible by the efforts of the Friends of the Library group, founded in 1968, and a bond levy approved by voters in 1973. The library system includes the Brookwood Library, Shute Park Library, Book-O-Mat located on the Tom Hughes Civic Center Plaza, and Novel Branch at Hidden Creek. It maintains 257,426 volumes and circulates 2.8 million items per year. It provides meeting and study rooms, public computers, assistive computer stations, WiFi, printing/copying/scanning/faxing, and notary services. Hillsboro Public Library also has a Makerspace, which provides collaboratory classes, events, and meetups as well as various tools for do-it-yourself activities.
